2022 - 2023 Scholarship Recipients


Angelicia Anderson

Ella Brookes.jpg   Angelicia is a senior at North Port High School. She plans to attend the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus in the fall of 2023, where she will be studying Biomedical Sciences. Angelicia is involved with many organizations at her high school, including student government, where she is both a historian and photographer. In her essay, she writes she is interested in Women's Wealth and would like to pursue a medical career in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Angelicia also volunteers at the Homeless Coalition in Charlotte County. The executive chef at the Homeless Coalition wrote, "she has shown a great amount of organizational skills, leadership qualities, passion, and drive for our organization and is a prime example to have around for others."
     
Marina Rose Berardi

Neftalie Cajuste.jpg   Marina will graduate from Venice High School and attend either University of Central Florida, the University of Florida, or Ringling College in the field of Art-Computer Animation. Art is the vehicle Marina uses to express herself and cope with difficulties as they arise. She shows her unique point of view of her life and the lives of those around her in her art, hoping to connect with her audiences. Ultimately, her goal is to make her family and friends proud. Marina works at Target, saving for her college expenses. Dependable, driven, friendly, knows her duties, and a guaranteed leader are words and phrases used to describe Marina.
     
Alora Black

Miranda Casanova.jpg   Alora will graduate from North Port High School with honors in the AICE program in May 2023. She plans to attend college at either the University of Florida or Florida Gulf Coast University. The effects from quarantining her entire sophomore year of high school due to COVID-19 made her interested in pursuing a degree in Psychology and becoming a therapist. Alora wrote in her essay, "It is my mission in life to be of aid and to create peace where there is hardship." Alora's high school art teacher wrote a letter of recommendation which said, "Alora is a phenomenal artist" and "she will be a great leader and innovator in her field of study one day."
     
Maija Boelkins

Alena Chamberlain.jpg   aija has had an outstanding career at Booker High School. She ranks in the upper five percent of her class, all while participating in specialized dance and remaining active in student government. Her plans are to study Dance and Linguistics at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, where she has already been accepted. Maija was born in Australia and has studied abroad, making her a true international student. She is accomplished in the Korean language, having spent time in Gwangju, South Korea, and plans to continue with that language specialty during her college years and beyond. Maija has been described as "the total package," noting that she is teachable and humble. Her academic record, leadership, and character make her the perfect OWC Scholarship recipient. 
     
Rebekah Bourque

Shannon Dowdy.jpg   ebekah's plans are to attend Florida State University and study Criminology. Her ultimate goal is to become a civil discrimination attorney. She has volunteered at the Pinnacle Academy, where she discovered an interest in special education. During her high school career at Cardinal Mooney High School, she has served as President of the National Honor Society, Saint Vincent DePaul, and Mock Trial, also acting as its founder. Rebekah excels in English and history, as noted in one of her recommendations. An assistant Florida state attorney notes that she has been tasked with analyzing both misdemeanor and felony cases while assisting in his office, providing summaries of case strengths and weaknesses and providing input on how cases might move forward. 
     
Alyssa Collier

Faith Dunleavy.jpg   Alyssa is a senior at Riverview High School and plans to study Biomedical Engineering and broaden her knowledge of sickle cell anemia. Her school choices include Johns Hopkins, the University of Florida, and Florida Southern University. Alyssa hopes to travel abroad to observe the medical work taking place in this area and, ultimately, to help make treatments more available to the public. In addition to being an excellent student, Alyssa has been involved in numerous extracurricular activities with leadership positions in various honor societies and sports. She also developed the Girls for Good program to aid elementary school children to gain art skills and then deliver the finished product to retirement homes to brighten the days of the residents. Allyssa has the academic skills and passion to help people through research.
     
Kaitlyn Haley

Asiyah Hadley.jpg   Kaitlyn attends Venice High School, where she is a member of the Venice High School Medical Academy. In the fall, she will be attending the University of South Florida in Tampa to study Nursing. Kaitlyn has been a dancer for 11 years and wants to continue with her passion by minoring in dance or joining a dance team in college. After becoming a registered nurse, she would like to join Doctors Without Borders and provide care to victims of conflict, natural disasters, epidemics, and health care exclusion. The director of her dance company wrote, "as a student dancer, and dance instructor, Miss Haley demonstrates a love of learning and the highest level of commitment."
     
Ambrynn Julius

Samantha McLeod.jpg   Ambrynn attends North Port High School and plans to study Environmental Engineering when she heads to college. Her school choices include the University of Florida, the University of Central Florida, and the University of South Florida. She has participated in dance for over 13 years and served as the Vice President and Secretary for the National Honor Society at her school. Her passion for climate change and the importance of our environment has led her to her choice of majors in college. One letter of recommendation states that Ambrynn exemplifies creativity and diligence and is comfortable with challenging herself beyond her comfort zone.
     
Natalie Kisgen

Lauren McMahon.jpg   After graduating #1 in her class from Venice High School, Natalie will attend the University of Florida, where her field of study will be Biology with an emphasis in Health Sciences. As of now, her interests are in dermatology and pediatrics, but she is not limiting herself to these disciplines. Ideally, Natalie would like to attend Physician Assistant school after getting her undergraduate degree. Natalie received stellar recommendations from her Art Teacher and her IB Diploma Program Coordinator, whose adjectives included: sensitive, insightful, eloquent, mature, positive, balanced, and extraordinary, to mention a few. Outside of the classroom, Natalie is actively involved in the Best of Friends Organization, in which she builds relationships with special needs peers. This is an activity Natalie will continue at FSU, along with honing her thrifting skills!
     
Leah Kolesnikov 

Adelyn Morris.jpg   Leah is a senior at Riverview High School and plans to attend the University of South Florida in the fall to study Nursing. She is passionate about being the first generation in a family of immigrants to attend college. Leah plans to become a travel nurse, then continue in the medical field by becoming a Physician Assistant focused in pediatrics. She wants to support and encourage nurturing mothers and their children. Leah is described as a natural and caring leader and is sure to achieve her ultimate goal of positively impacting the world.
     
 Kaley Maze

Alina Orozco Vasquez.jpg   Kaley is a senior at Booker High School who plans to attend Florida State University, double majoring in Health Sciences and Psychology. Her goal is to become a Psychiatric Physician Assistant. In addition to being a member of the Marching Band and the Visual and Performing Arts Program, Kaley has been involved with the Pre-Med program since her sophomore year, all while working 25 hours per week. Kaley writes that one of her dreams is to work in third-world countries where mental health care is much less accessible. One of her teachers writes, "… rarely do I have the opportunity to meet a student as responsible and committed to service as Kaley… I am totally certain that Kaley will continue to make a difference for humanity and herself, in college and beyond." Kaley will no doubt help make our world a better place.
     
Helen Mosquera

Ariana Romaner.jpg   A senior at Booker High School, Helen's long-term plan is to become a lawyer fighting for improvements in the mental health care system in our country. Helen plans to attend Agnes Scott College, an all-women's school in Georgia, majoring in Women's Gender and Sexuality with a minor in Psychology, before going on to law school. Her extensive leadership activities have included: Sarasota Students for Justice, Girls Empowering Girls Everywhere, and College for Every Student Brilliant Pathways Ambassador. One of her teachers writes that she is bilingual and interested in marginalized groups – in particular, women and children who have no advocates – thus her interest in constitutional law and policies. She goes on to say, Helen "wants to be a voice for the silent and the forgotten and tell stories for those who cannot tell their own." 
     
Rylee Mulhollen

Sophia Santiago-Espinet.jpg   "Scholastically outstanding, a school leader, and stellar athlete," Rylee will graduate from Sarasota High School with an associate's degree and plans to attend Wake Forest University to major in International Studies. Reilly ultimately strives for a career in foreign service that will combine economics, politics, and the hard sciences to pursue her dream of becoming a member of the U.S. Department of State. She writes, "Often, international affairs are assessed through a dark tunnel of pain, suffering, poverty, and illness; however, I hope to change the narrative and instead assess international affairs as a bright horizon of opportunity to serve others…" One of her teachers says, "What impresses me most about Rylee is her strong moral compass… Whether she is advocating for local political action to conserve our environment or mentoring teens at the Social Competency Center of Sarasota, Rylee will do whatever she can to help others. She is a leader both inside and outside the classroom." 
     
Paige Singleton

Lily Steed.jpg   Paige is a student at Venice High School, where she has participated in the National Honor Society, the Science National Honor Society, and Girl-Up, among many other activities. She plans to study Ecology in college with an ultimate goal of getting her doctorate and becoming the lead ecologist at Denali National Park in Alaska. She will likely attend the University of Florida next year, although she is also looking at the University of Washington and the University of Colorado at Boulder. She has been  described as being honest, timely, and reliable. One of her letters of recommendation states that she has made a positive mark on her high school while there and will continue to be a positive force wherever she goes in life. 
     
Destiny Salomon

Annabelle Weber.jpg   Destiny is graduating from Venice High School and would like to attend The University of Central Florida this fall and study Political Science. She is deeply dedicated to the environment, particularly marine life, and feels her studies would enable her to help protect and restore our oceans. Destiny submitted an extensive legislative bill to protect sharks at Girl's State and advocated for the essential role they play in the marine ecosystem.  She has volunteered at Mote Marine Aquarium as a tour guide as well as a Junior Educator in the aquarium's exciting new program.   In addition, Destiny has participated in the city of Venice Student Government day. This exposure further enhanced her excitement to learn more about how she can play a leadership role in education and legislation protecting our marine life.  
     
Claire Timney 

Ella Ann Woei.jpg   Claire is a senior at Booker High School and hopes to attend Columbia College in Chicago this fall. She intends to study Theatre to progress her solo comedy and eventually go into theatre education, where she can help others find their voice in performance. Claire found her passion for working in the theatre during her junior year of high school. She also enjoys working with children and volunteering. Claire's great sense of humor and positive attitude will be important assets in achieving her career goals.
